This article offers a warning for pregnant women.  The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the Eur0pean Federation of Periodontology (EFP) are now recommending that pregnant women with periodontal disease may be at risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as giving birth to a low weight or pre-term baby.  Periodontal disease is a bacteria-induced, inflammatory condition that attacks the gums and in more severe cases, the bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss and has been associated with other serious diseases, such as cardiovascular disease. and diabetes.
