Advantages of Invisalign
Invisalign is a great way to straighten your teeth. Many people are familiar with the concept of clear aligners, but how does Invisalign compare to traditional orthodontic treatment? What are the advantages of Invisalign? This week’s blog will answer that question.
Virtually Invisible
The advantage that appeals to adult orthodontic patients the most is the appearance of Invisalign. The patented clear aligners are virtually invisible, so there is no embarrassment associated with the unsightly appearance of brackets and wires.
The aligners work by fitting over the teeth intimately and applying prescribed amounts and angulation s of force to achieve the desired movement. This intimate fit makes them very difficult to see in casual conversation, even if you are laughing and smiling widely. No other orthodontic option provides a better cosmetic advantage than Invisalign.
Removable
This feature of aligners is actually both an advantage and a disadvantage at the same time. You, the patient, can remove the aligners any time you want to remove them. this leads to many other advantages, which we will describe further in the following sections.
This feature functions as a disadvantage, too, because it gives the patient the ability to negatively affect their treatment’s success. The aligners only work when they are on the teeth. When you remove them, they are not working, and leaving them out frequently could lengthen or impair your treatment.
Even so, most people consider the removability of aligners to be an advantage. It gives you a lot of flexibility when it comes to social situations where you might be more comfortable without the aligners in place.
Better Oral Hygiene
Because you can remove the aligners with Invisalign, you are able to care for your teeth normally. With traditional brackets and wires, you have to use additional tools to help you remove all of the extra plaque they collect. Flossing underneath wires is quite difficult!
With aligners, you simply remove them in order to clean your teeth well. This allows our patients to maintain great oral health during orthodontic treatment, fighting cavities and gum disease. Most patients undergoing Invisalign treatment find that it becomes easier to clean their teeth well as the teeth straighten. This inspires and motivates improved plaque control!
You Are In Control
Speaking of control, with Invisalign, you are in control. You can take measures to slow down or speed up your treatment, according to your doctor’s instructions. We find that the patient’s motivation corresponds directly to the success of his or her treatment.
This does require discipline and compliance on the patient’s part, and for that reason, some people do not choose aligners for their teeth straightening. You know yourself and your level of motivation. If you like being in control, you’ll love Invisalign.
Whiten while You Straighten
The aligners fit over the teeth closely, and patients need to wear them a minimum of twenty-two hours each day for effective treatment. Many people use the aligners as carriers for professional whitening gel so that they are whitening the teeth as they straighten them. Talk to Dr. Chowning to find out if this is a good option for your specific situation.
