Commentary:
The Florida Keys Turtle Hospital has been caring for a 40-pound turtle named Elena, which was injured by an encounter with a boat. After several attempts by the hospital to seal a 10-inch split in Elena’s shell, the hospital turned to Dr. Fred Troxel, a dentist, who was able to bond two metal plates over the split in the shell. The hospital is confident that Elena will recover thanks to Dr. Troxel. This was apparently not his first procedure with the hospital’s turtle patients.
